Masina: “It’s A Pleasure”

For the second game running Adam Masina was the unlikely match winner, and nobody could have foreseen the unforgettable scenes that were to unfold deep into stoppage time at Cardiff City this afternoon.

The left-back rifled in the Hornets’ first goal from a direct free-kick since April 2016, clinching a huge 2-1 win that maintains Watford’s place in the top two with 10 games to go.

“I just tried to hit the ball as strong as I can in the middle, waiting for maybe a touch or as it happened a miss from the keeper,” said Masina, who now has two goals this season following last weekend’s winner against Nottingham Forest.

“Hughesy told me before to hit the target and I think he deserves an assist so I’m really happy for me, for him and for the team. We needed these three points and we look forward.

“For me I was excited as always because a goal is something special. Scoring in the 90th minute is important but it’s just three points and now we have to be ready for the next match.”

Cardiff are a notoriously physical opponent but the Hornets more than stood up to the challenge, inflicting a first defeat on the Bluebirds in the 12 league matches since the appointment of Mick McCarthy.

“They have a big guy behind, a big guy in front, so we knew already this was going to be a fight but in the end I think we deserved these three points,” said Masina.

“It’s a pleasure for me but the important thing is the squad and the team. In this moment we have to keep fighting until the end because the target is not here, it is a long way [to go] and we have to keep pushing.”
