After a busy few weeks of international action, the summer fixtures are gradually coming to a close with several Watford stars having enjoyed playing key roles for their countries.
Following the Super Eagles’ victory against Sierra Leone last week (June 9), forward Emmanuel Dennis was on the scoresheet as a dominant Nigeria beat São Tomé and PrÃncipe 10-0 (June 13).
The Hornet was introduced with 20 minutes left to play in the Africa Cup of Nations qualification Group A clash, and stepped up to take a penalty after winning it in the dying embers of the match, sliding the ball into the left-hand corner.
Dennis’ spot-kick ensured that the match will be recorded as Nigeria’s biggest-ever international victory, surpassing their previous best – a 10-1 win over Benin in 1959.
In the Kirin Cup third-place play-off, Francisco Sierralta’s Chile were overpowered 3-1 on penalties by Ghana (June 14). After a goalless game that saw Ghana receive two red cards, La Roja were unable to capitalise with Sierralta substituted in the 81st minute.
Elsewhere, after helping Norway kickstart their UEFA Nations League campaign on a high, Joshua King was an unused substitute as Norway beat Sweden 3-2 (June 12) to maintain their place at the top of Group B4.
In Group C1 fellow Watford forward Tiago Cukur was also an unused sub as Turkey saw off Luxembourg 2-0 on Saturday (June 11), moving them clear at the top of the ranks.
Finally, Dapo Mebude played 90 minutes as Scotland’s Under-21s drew 1-1 with Denmark (June 10) in Group I of the European Championship Under-21 qualifiers.
