Hamer On Huddersfield Defeat: “We Need To Take Responsibility”

By: Watford FC Staff

Goalkeeper Ben Hamer spoke to watfordfc.com after Watford's 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town in the Sky Bet Championship.

Read what he had to say below...

I don’t know where to start really. I think over the 90 minutes it was an inept performance. We couldn’t string a 10 or five-yard pass together. I think we’ve got to take full responsibility because we weren’t good enough from start to finish.

We didn’t take responsibility all over the pitch. We scored a goal against the run of play which we didn’t deserve if I’m being blunt. Then you’re 1-0 up and that’s got to give you a bit of impetus to go on and win the game. We’ve had a nightmare first-half and you think ‘we’ll push on now’ but then we conceded two goals from opposition throw-ins.

All game we couldn’t get out from throw-ins, they were aggressive and we were far too nice, you’ve got to call a spade a spade. We’ve given people four yards from throw-ins, allowing them to cross balls into the box and that’s going to cause problems. They brought Danny Ward on who has been prolific in this league and he was allowed to score two easy goals out of nothing.

The management and staff have given us the right training all week and put us out there to go and put on a performance and as a group we’ve not delivered, so it’s a bitterly disappointing afternoon. We want to turn fortunes around at home and get wins on the board but if you perform like that you’re not going to get any points.

We’re all down in there but it has to come from within, I think as a whole we’re too nice and we need to be a lot more aggressive. We didn’t win duels, the two lads came off early which doesn’t bode well as it shows something’s not going right.

We’re the ones who go out on the pitch and we’ve got to deliver a performance. We gave them four or five opportunities in the first 20 minutes and I wasn’t surprised that our own crowd were booing as it’s what we deserved if I’m being frank.

The Championship’s a brutal division, I’ve spent many years in this league and I know what it takes to get out of this league. For me we’ve been too soft, we’ve got to go out on the training pitch now, we’ve got a game on Saturday away at Millwall and we need to liven up. All I can say is a big apology for everyone who came and watched today because, for our standards, it was not good enough.

Away from home we’ve been very resolute, strong and hard to beat, and for some reason, I can’t put my finger on it, it’s not happening at home.

We're not turning in the performances that warrant winning games. Even at 1-0 up we have two big chances and we didn’t take them. We have to take responsibility as if we’re 2-0 up we’re home and hosed. Responsibility comes from me all the way to the top of the pitch.
