Gray: “We've Just Got To Kick On”

Andre Gray is confident the club has the players and the right mentality to continue the climb away from trouble and make sure the Hornets are in the Premier League for a sixth successive season.

Watford's season will resume on June 20 and the Golden Boys will be keen to build on a run of five wins in 12 league matches before the campaign came to a temporary halt because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The remaining nine fixtures are likely to come thick and fast, but Gray feels the squad has sufficient depth and that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet to cope with the run-in.

“We've got more than enough,” said Gray. “The circumstances are difficult but we are all in the same boat. We now know what is happening and we need to focus now and try to carry on where we left off. We've just got to kick on. We know the job at hand and we can't make any excuses.

“It's going to be strange but I think we are going to have a few friendlies and train at the stadium and get a feel of it again. We are going to have to get used to it. There are no excuses anymore and we've got to deal with everything accordingly. We've got to do the job we set out to do.”

Gray's faith, and that of many others, stems from Head Coach Nigel Pearson. He has masterminded relegation escape acts at Carlisle, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City and is shaping up to pull off another one at Vicarage Road. He has energised the players and developed a sense of unity.

“It's the most comfortable I've felt since I've been here,” said Gray, who signed from Burnley in the summer of 2017.

“I feel he brought me back to how it felt at Burnley and that's when I was at my best. I like managers when they are honest. I like to know I can have a conversation with them and just be told what I need to do. I haven't played properly under him as the boys have done well, but I've enjoyed him being here.

“I've got to keep pushing myself under him and he's a big help for me. He's strict and I think you need that. Some players might not like that, but you need discipline and to know the manager is not going to take any rubbish, and we've seen that since he's come in and how well we've done.“
