Fixtures 2022/23: Sheffield United First Under The Vicarage Road Lights!

By: Watford FC Staff

Overview

The Hornets will get their 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship campaign underway at home to Sheffield United on Monday August 1, with the fixture - set to kick-off at 8pm - having been selected for Sky Sports coverage.

Head Coach Rob Edwards will be hoping to extend Watford’s five-game unbeaten run against the Blades that stretches back to a 3-0 win at The Vic in February 2010, while the teams’ last second-tier clash - in March 2011 - produced the same scoreline.

A trip to Steve Bruce’s West Bromwich Albion five days after the Sheffield United fixture (Saturday August 6) marks the Golden Boys’ first away game of the season, before a return home to welcome fellow relegated side Burnley on Saturday August 13.

A first on-pitch meeting with Troy Deeney since his Vicarage Road departure could be on the cards when the Hornets travel to his current club Birmingham City on Tuesday August 16, while further outings against Preston North End (Saturday August 20), Queens Park Rangers (Saturday August 27) and Middlesbrough (Tuesday August 30) will take place before the club’s first month of competition is out.

That home match against Boro under the lights will mark the 100th anniversary of Watford’s first match at Vicarage Road, with Edwards’ men looking for a win to cap off the celebrations that will be taking place at the stadium.

A hotly-anticipated match-up with local rivals Luton Town is scheduled to take place at home on Saturday October 22, with the away game at Kenilworth Road in the diary for Saturday April 1.

Bristol City will be Watford’s hosts in the final round of Championship fixtures before the break for the 2022 Qatar World Cup on Saturday November 12, with a home clash against Hull City marking the resumption of play on Saturday December 10.

It’s Millwall at home on Boxing Day - with the Lions having fallen to a 4-0 defeat the last time they travelled to The Vic on that date, in 2013 - while a visit to Carrow Road to face Norwich City is in store on New Year’s Day.

There are seven matches scheduled in a busy April before the Golden Boys conclude the 46-game campaign at home to Stoke City on Saturday May 6, three weeks before the Championship play-off final on Monday May 29.

All fixtures are subject to change and may be rescheduled due to cup competitions and international fixtures. The remaining EFL broadcast selections for August will be announced in due course.
