Statement: Watford FC Women Name Change

By: Watford FC Staff

Watford FC’s female team will henceforth be known as Watford FC Women, replacing the team’s old name of Watford FC Ladies.

Watford FC Women continue to work on growing all aspects of the team both on and off the pitch. We see our female players as role models for the younger generation, just as we do our men's team, and hope our achievements can help inspire and empower even more women and girls to be involved in the game.

The new name is representative of a modern view on language and equality and is in keeping with the way our governing bodies, supporters, squad and management regard the women's game.

Changing the name will see us move away from referring to our men’s team as the 'first' team, to acknowledge the ever-growing status of women’s football. The club will only use the name ‘Watford FC Women’ in order to differentiate the side from the men’s team. We will, wherever possible, refer to our women’s team as ‘Watford’ – the same as we do our men’s team.

Grace Williams, General Manager of Watford FC Women, said: “This is a sign of togetherness and unity to keep in line with modern day thinking and equality.

“It’s just another strand to our One Club approach here at Watford. This is an important and progressive step as we continue into the next step of our journey in women’s football.”

Watford FC Women are continuously working with the clubs Community Sports & Education Trust to support the educational offer currently being delivered in their existing educational projects in relation to Black Lives Matter (BLM). Watford FC Women will also be making changes in the coming season and beyond in support of BLM.
