Bachmann: “It’s Too Early To Get Excited”

Daniel Bachmann was full of praise for the defensive efforts of his teammates after keeping a ninth clean sheet in his 16th league appearance for the Hornets.

Birmingham City managed 14 shots but the goalkeeper ultimately had just one save to make, a stat that Bachmann believes reflects well on those playing in front of him.

“As a goalkeeper you want to keep clean sheets, you don’t want to concede goals so that’s a positive,” said the 26-year-old after a 3-0 win at The Vic.

“All I can do is talk to the players as much as I can, try and help them keep the ball away from me and deal with whatever comes my way, whether it’s a cross or a shot. I had a couple of crosses and punches today so that’s all I can do.

“We’ve been very solid defensively and kept a lot of clean sheets recently, which is good and what we need if we want to go where we want to.”

Bachmann is particularly pleased with how Watford have dealt with the physical threat posed in recent games by the Blues, Rotherham and Cardiff, something he believes is down to the work undertaken on the training pitch.

“We look at how teams play before we play them and fit the training sessions on what they do,” he said.

“The last few games there have been a lot of aerial duels, a lot of corners, long balls in the box and even throw-ins.

“It’s difficult to deal with but we’ve come out well in the end and won the last three games. It just shows defensively we’re very solid and that’s what we need.”

The Hornets have now win nine out of 10, and five on the trot since a defeat at Bournemouth that has clearly galvanised Xisco Muñoz’s squad of players.

“It was a great reaction after the Bournemouth game, which hurt a little bit for various reasons, so to come out and win the next five is the perfect reaction to that. We just have to kick on now and focus on the last eight games,” said the Austrian.

“It doesn’t matter what other teams do. If we keep winning that's great and that’s what we’re trying to achieve, but it’s too early to get excited and think about promotion because that means we're losing focus.

“We just have to look at the next game against Sheffield Wednesday in two weeks and getting the three points then.”
