Academy: Coyne Signs For Young Hornets

Highly-rated youth prospect Aidan Coyne has joined Watford’s Under-21 side on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 season, subject to international clearance.

The centre-half arrives from A-League side Perth Glory in Australia, where he made his professional debut in November 2021 aged 18. Having played for the Under-23s squad for two years prior to making the step up to the senior set-up, Coyne’s experience is impressive despite his tender years.

Coyne comes from a great sporting family, being the son of Chris, and grandson of John who are both former Socceroos. His uncle Jamie also played football professionally, while his mother is a former youth international netballer.

After spending time on trial with a number of English clubs, Coyne Jr. is proud to have finally signed for the Hornets.

“It is a great pleasure; Watford is an absolutely massive club and I couldn’t ask for a better team to be at,” said the teenager, who made five appearances in the Australian top-flight during 2021/22.

“Me and my family are very proud. I’ve not spoken to them too much about it, but I can only imagine that they are very happy and very proud.”

With both of Coyne’s parents playing high-level sports, Coyne is no stranger to the decision-making that is integral to making it to the top, and having already played professionally in Australia, he knows first-hand the work that needs to be put in along the way.

He said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work, listening and learning along with a bit of risk and a bit of luck, and that’s ultimately what got me here. I know the commitment and dedication that I need to put in going forward, and I’m looking forward to getting going.”

With an option to extend his deal for another year following the completion of this campaign, Coyne is looking to continue his development with Watford, hoping his experience at senior level will put him in a good position.

“For the moment my aims are pretty short term, just to keep developing, keep getting better and training hard,” he added.

“Listening to the coaches and the pros at the club will allow me to keep improving each and every day.”

Welcome to Watford, Aidan!
