Sat 29th Feb, 2020Watford ended Liverpool's lengthy winning run in style at Vicarage Road in 2020, playing the Reds off the park in a comprehensive victory.

The Story

Until they arrived at Vicarage Road in February, Liverpool were unbeaten in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season and there was talk of the Reds matching Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ in finishing the campaign without a defeat.

Jürgen Klopp’s European and World club champions had won 26 of their 27 league matches – drawing only to Manchester United – and victory against the Hornets would make it 19 in a row and set a record as the longest winning run in the English top flight.

Nigel Pearson’s Watford had other ideas. A back four of Kiko Femenía, Craig Cathcart, Christian Kabasele and Adam Masina nullified a Liverpool front three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané, who had scored 38 league goals between them that season.

At the other end, captain Troy Deeney proved too much for Dejan Lovren to handle and Ismaïla Sarr got in behind Andy Robertson time after time. Watford could even have taken the lead right before the break, Deeney going close with a chipped effort.

The match was goalless at half-time, a respectable scoreline against the league leaders, but the Hornets were not satisfied with taking one point from this fixture.

After 54 minutes, Sarr pounced upon an Abdoulaye Doucouré cross to put the hosts ahead. Six minutes later he was played in again and finished emphatically to double the lead. When Deeney scored a third in the 72nd minute, the victory was sealed.

Watford had not just beaten Liverpool, they had battered them. They had ended the Reds’ hopes of going the league season unbeaten and the magnitude of the victory meant it made headlines across the country and around the globe. But, most importantly, Watford had secured a vital three points in front of a jubilant Vicarage Road support.

In the end, this win turned out to be one of few highlights during an otherwise disappointing season and the Hornets were relegated from the top flight. But, on the night, it was a performance to be proud of.
