Ladies: Ward Wins SSE Player Of The Round Award

Helen Ward’s role in Watford FC Ladies’ 7-2 win over Middlesbrough Women has been recognised, with the skipper being named as the SSE Women’s FA Cup Player of the Round.

The forward scored four times as the Golden Girls set up an away tie at Manchester City Women in the fourth round.

“It was a great team performance at Middlesbrough and while it’s an honour to be named Player of the Round, I feel like it could have gone to any one of my team-mates,” Ward told Sportsbeat.

“I love playing for this badge and I’m hoping to help push us up the ladder in the right direction.”

Head Coach Armand Kavaja understandably is full of praise for both the captain’s performance and her influence around the club.

“I say this to the players a lot, especially the younger ones, they are very lucky to have Helen around,” said Kavaja.

“She leads by example in a rare way – she’s not the most vocal. That’s not her personality and I don’t want to push her to be, but she measures her words and all the girls listen.

“Being named Player of the Round is a very well-deserved award for her, she was superb at Middlesbrough and I think she’ll continue to be important for us going forward.”

Watford’s next game in the SSE Women’s FA Cup will be on Saturday February 2 and it’s a match-up against one of the best sides in the country, Manchester City Women.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, especially for some of the younger members of the squad who won’t have played against players of that calibre before,” Ward said.

“We can’t go to City and be overawed. It’s going to be a platform for some of the younger players to stake a claim.

“If they want to make a career out of football, these are the sorts of games they need to show they can do it. I’ve no doubt we’ll go out there and give it our all – it’s the FA Cup, why can’t it be us?”

Congratulations Helen!
