Gracia: “I Believed Until The End”

By David Anderson

Javi Gracia believed Watford were in the game until the final whistle against Everton and dominated spells, insisting results will come if his team continues to play this way.

“I think today we had a good performance,” said the Head Coach. “We were close to getting a better result. I think we deserved a better result. We had some clear chances, some moments when we dominated the game. We had more possession and the same shots on target, more corners than them. But we didn’t score and we need to try to be better next time.”

Gracia lamented several missed chances and what he felt was an unfortunate goal to concede early on in a game which went to the wire.

“They scored from a long ball and we were a bit unlucky because our defender touched the shot a little bit,” he said. “After, we hit the crossbar, had a clear chance with Troy. I believed until the end. In the second half we started dominating and I think we had three corner kicks in the first three minutes. We were playing in the opposition’s half, but you have to score if you want to get points.”

Watford have not started the season as brightly as last campaign – when they won their first four on the trot – but Gracia remains calm and confident going into next week’s fixture against West Ham United.

“Last season we won the first two games,” said Gracia. “Comparing with that beginning, it’s difficult to do it again. But I think we are calm. We know if we work like we are doing we’ll get better results in the next games. I think we have good options in the next games to get points. Playing this way, I’m sure we’ll do it.”

There will not be an overhaul of the starting XI according to Gracia, who explained each selection would be carefully considered depending on the opposition, and not reactionary.

“I’m happy with all my squad, with all my players, they know all of them are important this season,” he said. “I try to decide every game what is better for the team. If someone expects a lot of change if we lose or for us to play with the same team if we win, I think he is wrong because it doesn’t depend only on the result. We have to look for the way to play as well as possible every game, and I think today the performance was good.”

Danny Welbeck made his debut for the Hornets against Everton, and Gracia said he would be an asset to the team in games to come.

“I am happy for him because he was a long time injured and today was his first game,” said the Head Coach. “He had the team happy with his performance and I’m sure in the future he will help us.”
