Matchday live

9:54 PM

Full-time in Manchester

That's it. The Hornets haven't been embarrassed, that's for sure. Neither side were at their best here but the hosts' quality shone through with goals from Sterling and Aguero coming either side of a Kabasele own goal.

Andre Gray netted a late consolation for Watford, and had Pereyra been awarded a late penalty we could have been set for an interesting last couple of minutes.

9:53 PM - 90 MIN

Penalty denied!

Now, now, now. That should have been a Watford penalty. City all over the place at the back.

Ederson's skews his clearance. Doucoure fluffs his attempted shot and it falls to Pereyra, who takes a touch past Otamendi and is taken down. Lee Mason says no, replays suggest there was contact. That's full-time.

9:41 PM - 83 MIN

Yellow card
Pereyra

9:38 PM - 81 MIN

Gray pulls one back

Perhaps the first meaningful attack for Watford this half and they've scored. Carrillo gets past Walker and puts it on a plate for Gray, who nets for the first time since Newcastle away at the end of the November. 3-1.

9:16 PM - 57 MIN

City on top

The hosts are playing some neat stuff here and in truth, Watford are struggling to get near them.

They could have had a penalty but Lee Mason waved away Aguero's claims after Wague took him down. Replays suggest it was a good decision, the Watford defender just getting to the ball first.

8:48 PM

That's half-time

The frustrating thing is, City have been anything but their sparkling best. The Hornets will be disappointed with both goals conceded, a Sterling tap-in and a Kabasele own goal.

They could even have had one or two themselves, but City keeper Ederson twice did well to thwart Gray. Second half to follow.

8:29 PM - 29 MIN

Ederson saves

Gray is played in behind Otamendi and forces a great stop from Ederson from a tight angle. Gray couldn't have done any more there. That's why City bought the big Brazilian.

8:24 PM - 24 MIN

Yellow card
Silva

Ben Watson steals the ball from David Silva and looks to break, but the Spaniard grabs a handful of his shirt to stop the move. He's not happy, but he's in the book.

Both sides observe a minute's silence prior to kick-off to remember those we lost in 2017.

8:17 PM - 17 MIN

Gomes saves

De Bruyne steps up to take a free-kick 25-yards from goal and it would have gone in, but for the fingernails of Heurelho Gomes who flicks the ball onto the crossbar.

8:12 PM - 12 MIN

City double their lead

De Bruyne gets in behind Carrillo on the right and squares, and in preventing Sterling from tapping in his second diverts the ball into his own net. 0-2, and it's looking a very long way back now.

8:07 PM - 7 MIN

Chance!

City are caught out with the long diagonal ball and Gray is in behind on the left. The ball won't fall as he would like, and by the time the front-man tries a lob Ederson is there to close it down.

Sane breaks down the left and fires a cross to the back post. Zeegelaar can't get his foot to it and Sterling taps home from four yards. 0-1.

Stefano Okaka misses tonight's game through illness according to Marco Silva.

“He came with us but didn't feel well. Tom [Cleverley] is not in the best conditions to start the match so Capoue gets a chance.”

The Teams

Two changes for the Hornets at the Etihad Stadium. Stefano Okaka misses out so Andre Gray comes into the starting XI. Tom Cleverley drops to the bench for Étienne Capoue.

For the hosts Kevin De Bruyne is a shock starter after his knock sustained against Crystal Palace, and David Silva returns having missed a couple of the last three for personal reasons.
