Silva on spirited comeback

Marco Silva spoke to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle:

"I told my players at half time this is not our image. We were anxious - this is not normal for us.

"I said start again at 0-0 and believe in your own game. Everything was different in the second half. We showed good character to come back into the game.

"We didn't deserve all of this result."

“We have to remember the positive things”- Doucouré

Abdoulaye Doucouré spoke to the broadcast media after the final whistle and another goalscoring game for the Frenchman:

"We are very disappointed because we started very well, but we have to remember the positive things.

"Everybody believed, we came back well. They are a big team, now we have to carry on and stay positive. We concede too many goals today but we have to learn and stay positive.

"I ran into the box, put my foot through the ball and it was a good finish. [David] De Gea is the best keeper in the world so it's nice to score against him."

All over at The Vic

There was hope, but not for very long.

Three quick-fire goals from United took the game away from the Hornets before half-time and despite a brief rally, Deeney and Doucoure getting it back to 3-2, Lingard settled it. Reaction to follow.

Oh dear.

Mariappa is robbed of possession on the edge of the box by Rashford who rolls to Lukaku.

Action at both ends

A couple of shouts for a penalty for Watford, both pushes from corners. The first was certainly clumsy from Rojo on Prodl.

United then break and Lukaku's cross-shot trickles wide.

HALF-TIME: Watford 0-3 Manchester United

Well, that didn't go according to plan.

The Golden Boys had a lot of good possession and a handful of chances in the first quarter of an hour, but since then the visitors have stepped up a level and scored three goals.

Former-Hornet Ashley Young opened his account with a powerful strike out of nothing, before adding a second with a direct free-kick. Anthony Martial then slotted one in from the edge of the area to give the Red Devils a commanding lead just after the half-hour mark.

Richarlison had an opportunity to claw one back before half-time, but his header clipped the top of the bar and went out. There's much to do in the second period to get anything from this game now.

8:45 PM - 45 MIN

Gomes saves the Hornets

Again. And Again. And again.

Lukaku powers 40 yards and forces a low save from Gomes. Lingard looks for all the world like he'll stroke the loose ball home but our Brazilian stopper is up again to flip the ball over the bar.

8:41 PM - 41 MIN

Mariappa

Mariappa needlessly crunches into Martial and gets a yellow card. Another free-kick opportunity for Young... into the wall.

8:37 PM - 38 MIN

Rojo

Rojo goes into the book for hauling Gray over by the halfway line.

8:32 PM - 32 MIN

Martial makes it three

The first two goals may have oozed quality but United's third was very much of the Golden Boys' own making.

Kabasele and Prodl both miss chances to clear the ball and Martial breaks through to slot underneath Gomes.

Three shots, three goals for the visitors.

Two moments of brilliance from Ashley Young and the game is drifting away.

Doucoure hauls back Pogba 30-yards out and Young hits a wicked, looping free-kick into the top corner that Gomes could only make a half-hearted attempt at as it flew in.

A long, long way back for Watford now.

“It's good to have so many options” - Mariappa

Adrian Mariappa spoke pre-match with Faye Carruthers:

"We are confident. Our self belief is high. We're in a good bit of form coming into this game.

"To have someone like Troy on bench shows our depth. It's good to have so many options and these are the sort of problems the manager will like."

In The Press

Chairman and CEO Scott Duxbury has been speaking to Simon Johnson from the Evening Standard:

"I don’t like all the furore or being starstruck before we play one of the big teams because we can be as good as them. We just have to believe it and go for it."

You can read the full interview here.

Then and Now

Tom Cleverley initially came to Watford on loan as a youngster from Manchester United.

Now that he's returned - permanently - he's been a central component of Marco Silva's side, playing in attacking and defensive midfield and even full-back when required!

Doucs on Devils

“Last season we beat them at home but this year they are better. They are second in the table and they have very good players.

“Maybe we can do something of course, we are confident, we’re playing at home and we want to achieve something. Of course we can beat them again.”

See the full interview here.

Let's carry on Hornets!

6:20 PM

Mourinho on Hornets

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho had this to say about Watford in his pre-match press conference:

"They have a squad full of very good players, who are not normal to be in these mid-table teams, and they have a good coach.

"They have improved a lot from last season too."

The Golden Boys ran out 3-1 winners over United in last season's home fixture...so if Watford are better this season, can we expect an even bigger margin of victory? 🤔 😏
