Matchday live

5:45 PM

Over and out.

That's all from us, but keep your eyes peeled on watfordfc.com, as our Match Review page will be up shortly with exclusive post-match interviews, social media reaction and a full match report (extended highlights will follow).

Safe journey home to all those who travelled down to the South Coast. Next up: Leicester City travel to the Vic on Boxing Day.

5:20 PM

Silva Speaks

Marco Silva has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day after this afternoon's defeat:

"It was not a good game to watch. We didn't do what we can do well.

"We played more with our heart than our quality."

5:05 PM

Frustration.

4:50 PM

All over at The Amex

You can't fault the Hornets for effort, work-rate, determination. They had the ugly this afternoon but they lacked the quality in Brighton's half to get anything from the game.

They still might have snatched something, the last moment of the match seeing the otherwise faultless Brighton stopper Mat Ryan let one through his fingers that Okaka could only divert over the bar from no more than a yard. It came at him quickly, but it'll be no consolation to he or anyone with a Watford affinity.

Back to the drawing board for Marco Silva's men. Leicester at The Vic on Boxing Day their next opportunity to put right the wrongs of December so far.

Dunk goes close

He's been looking for his first Premier League goal all season and he should have just had it - Lewis Dunk rises highest and somehow heads wide of goal. Gomes was rooted.

4:20 PM - 64 MIN

Brighton lead

Gomes won't be happy. Faultless so far in the game though he has been, he lets Pascal Groß' shot underneath him from the edge of the box. 1-0.

Watford chance!

Richarlison starts and finishes a move, his snap-shot forced wide by Mat Ryan in the Seagulls' net. Better.

4:05 PM - 48 MIN

Hemed over

One, two, three Brighton players have the opportunity to shoot but none do. Eventually Hemed goes for goal and it's way, way over the bar.

4:01 PM - 46 MIN

Back underway at the Amex.

The ball gets rolling for the second period.

3:45 PM

Level at the interval

Brighton have had the chances but the Hornets have crept back into this one as the half has gone on. Watford have defended well but will need more going forward if they're to get anything out of the game.

3:45 PM - 45 MIN

Additional Time

One minute to be added on at the end of the first half.

3:31 PM - 31 MIN

Good save!

Gomes saves point-blank at the far post, keeping out Goldson who tried to squeeze his header in from a floated corner.

3:27 PM - 27 MIN

Bruno escapes

Bruno is late on Richarlison leaving the Brazilian in a heap. Play goes on and referee Paul Tierney decides just a word is enough for the Spaniard.

Chance!

Cleverley tries a training-ground routine from Watford's first corner of the match. He floats the ball out to the edge of the area with Pereyra waiting, but his volley goes wide.

3:13 PM - 13 MIN

Living dangerously

Watford haven't started yet and Brighton are taking full advantage. March's cross is just out of Knockaert's reach.

3:05 PM - 5 MIN

Chance for Brighton

Knockaert goes through despite claims for offside and drags his shot wide. Let-off for the Hornets

3:00 PM - 1 MIN

Kick-off!

Come on you 'Orns!

An late change to the Hornets' bench. Orestis Karnezis has a minor back problem so Daniel Bachmann takes his spot.

“A good chance to prove something” - Silva

Marco Silva spoke pre-match to Sky Sports Johnny Phillips:

"We need to prove again on the pitch what is our goal. Our obligation is to perform 100% on the pitch. We respect our opponent.

"Every match is a good chance to prove something, to compete to take points, to show again attitude, commitment and behaviour that is for the best.

"They are trying to change their results because they have not been on a good run and we want to do the same, to take the three points for ourselves and our fans."

2:20 PM

“Everyone knows want they have to do” - Holebas

José Holebas has been speaking to Sky Sports about this afternoon's game:

"It's important to get results. We had bad moments in the last three games. We don't want to think about this, we must look forward and get points today.

"We always try to move forward in our games, but it's always the small details that makes the difference. We must be very focused on our game.

"Everyone knows want they have to do, the manager has done a good job preparing us for Brighton and we want the three points."

2:10 PM

Stepping Up

Michael Folivi makes the matchday squad, having scored a wonder-goal against Queens Park Rangers for the Under-23s earlier this week.

The 19-year-old made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Stoke City last season, and will wear the no.39 shirt again this afternoon.

2:00 PM

The Teams

Four changes for Watford this afternoon, some enforced and some tactical.

With Troy Deeney and Abdoulaye Doucouré suspended, Andre Gray and Ben Watson, starting for the first time since August and in his first Premier League game since May 2016, come into the starting XI.

Etienne Capoue drops out for Roberto Pereyra, while Adrian Mariappa is also on the bench as Marco Silva reverts to four at the back. Under-23 goal man Michael Folivi is a substitute for the Golden Boys.

For Brighton, Shane Duffy falls foul of a fifth yellow card suspension so youngster Connor Goldson comes into the middle of defence to partner Lewis Dunk. Watford's favourite pantomime villain Anthony Knockaert also starts.
