Wycombe Wanderers

Watford put four past Wycombe Wanderers underneath the sunshine at London Colney, as Ismaïla Sarr notched two and Emmanuel Dennis and Yáser Asprilla got on the scoresheet.

Senegal international Sarr got his first from 12-yards-out after winning the penalty with a neat piece of skill. Having taken just a one-goal lead into the break, the Hornets were much more clinical after the interval.

Sarr doubled his tally, rolling the ball under the Wycombe goalkeeper, before Dennis tapped home to mark his first start of pre-season in style. Despite a consolation goal for the Chairboys, Asprilla went on to score his first for Watford in the dying stages of the match, rounding off the Hornets’ impressive victory.

It took just two minutes for Sarr to make his mark on proceedings. After a raking long-ball from João Pedro, the 24-year-old won the spot-kick due to a clumsy challenge. Sarr stepped up and slid the ball to the goalkeeper’s left-hand side in composed fashion.

With the sun beating down, water breaks were in action. It was a few minutes after the first stoppage that João Pedro fired his first warning shot of the game.

The Chairboys tried to hit back as Sam Vokes headed the ball onto the post, but Francisco Sierralta was alert and guided the ball to safety.

Welshman Vokes would have another effort before half-time, with his powerful strike palmed away by an outstretched Daniel Bachmann, who was in-between the sticks for the first half.

After the break, Watford maintained their early pressure, forcing the visitors into a loose pass which Sarr pounced on and converted to double his tally and the team’s lead.

The Hornets were relentless as they notched their third of the afternoon moments later. João Pedro’s driving run created space for the Brazilian to shoot, with the ball landing at Dennis’ feet for a tap-in.

Sarr almost notched his third of the day, but for a heroic save from the Wycombe shot-stopper. The goalkeeper received medical attention following the move, before being substituted.

On the hour mark a flurry of substitutes were made, which included the debut of Rob Edwards’ latest signing Rey Manaj.

Despite a consolation goal from Wycombe’s Ryan Tafazolli, Watford extended their lead to four.

Following the introduction of Asprilla, the Colombian combined with Manaj and cleverly rolled the ball into the bottom corner to secure Watford’s first win of pre-season.
