Getting To Know: Zak Fraser-Grante

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated midfielder Zak Fraser-Grante.

The 17-year-old joined the Young Hornets in January 2023 from Hampton and Richmond Borough. He has recently featured for Omer Riza’s Under-21 side after impressing as a trialist.

How would you describe your playing style?
I’m a central midfielder who likes to drive with the ball, play forward and link up play. I also think working hard is very important in the middle of the park. I can play either as an eight or a 10.

Your footballing idol?
I would say Eden Hazard when I was younger. I loved watching him play. He was always very exciting and could dribble the ball, beating men with ease. I try and take aspects from his game and put it into my own.

Biggest influence?
I would say my dad. I would train with him and my brother for hours in the garden. He would give me advice all the time and make sure I was working on elements of my game. He has driven me around to football games a lot when I was younger as well, which is something I appreciate massively.

Most talented teammate?
George Abbott. He is a very good leader, works very hard and has great qualities on the pitch. He likes to play the ball forward a lot as well, which is when I get involved from midfield.

Favourite football memory?
Definitely signing for Watford earlier this year. It was a great feeling and that will stay with me forever. My parents and I are really happy and excited to get going.

Your aims for the future?
Short-term, I want to be a regular starter for the Under-21s. I want to improve as a player and long-term I want to play at the highest level.

Best advice you’ve received?
Enjoy every moment, work hard and every time you step on the pitch make sure you give everything.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
I don’t know to be honest. I’m studying a sports course at the moment, so it would be something within the sports industry.

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace 83 – I’m fairly quick.
Shooting 81 – I’ve got a decent shot but it’s something I’m working on.
Passing 80 – I feel like I have a decent range of passing.
Dribbling 81 – Another aspect I’m constantly working on.
Defending 75 – Something I want to improve on.
Physicality 76 – I’m working to get stronger in the gym.
OVERALL – 84
