Getting To Know: Scott Holding

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated defender Scott Holding.

The 19-year-old joined the Golden Boys in May 2022 after a productive spell with Stockport County. The centre-half captained County’s academy side, and impressed while on trial with Watford before making the move permanent.

How would you describe your playing style?
I like to be aggressive in defence and play the ball out and forward. Obviously, I like to win and keep a clean sheet. That’s my aim every time I step onto the pitch.

Your footballing idol?
John Terry and Nemanja Vidić are big inspirations of mine. I try and take their physical attributes especially, and the fact they put their bodies on the line. They would do anything to defend.

Biggest influence?
I’d say my dad. He has taken me everywhere, stuck with me and been great for advice. He’s been really important in my journey.

Most talented teammate?
I have to say that I really enjoy playing alongside George Abbott; he’s a really good defensive partner. We pair up quite well and we both know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We help each other out.

Favourite football memory?
I would say my debut at Stockport. It was really special because I was 18 years old at the time and it was in front of quite a big crowd against Larkhall Athletic.

Your aims for the future?
I just want to be playing first-team football. I want to try and get into men’s football. That’s really important to me.

Best advice you’ve received?
Richard Shaw [Under-21 Assistant Coach] told me that when defending you always have to think the worst. You have to think one step ahead defensively.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
I’m genuinely not sure what I would be doing without football. Nothing at school ever stood out to me in particular. My whole life has revolved around football and I can’t see myself doing anything else.

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace: 80 - For a defender I’m quite quick actually.
Shooting: 50 - My heading isn’t too bad, but my main job is to keep them out of the goal.
Passing: 83 - A hugely valuable asset for a modern-day centre-back.
Dribbling: 65 - Carrying the ball out of defence is important.
Defending: 90 - The most important attribute needed to be a defender.
Physicality: 80 - Another big part of my game.
OVERALL: 84
