Getting To Know: Ryan Andrews

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of young Hornets about their journey inside and outside of football.

Ryan Andrews, who is next to feature, was born in Watford and joined in 2012. The full-back has played for both the Under-23 and Under-18 sides this season.

Omer Riza's Under-23s host Cardiff City at Vicarage Road this Friday (March 11, 1pm KO) and ticket information is available HERE.

How would you describe your playing style?
I look up to players like Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joāo Cancelo – he can play at right-back or left-back. I’m a bit of both, I’m an attacking and defending full-back.

Favourite current Watford footballer?
Moussa Sissoko is my favourite because he has a huge amount of experience playing in the World Cup and the Champions League final. The knowledge he’s accumulated from everything he’s done throughout his career is amazing. I have spoken to first-team players, like him, who have given me advice about what to do and what not to do on the ball.

Biggest influence?
The Watford coaches have played a huge part in my development, believing in me. I’m an Under-18s player but since this season I’ve been playing with the Under-23s. It’s just about the coaches having faith in me and believing in my ability. Tom Hart, Omer Riza, Richard Shaw and Jimmy Gilligan have been the most important.

Favourite football kit?
I really like Benfica’s away kit this season, and the red Watford away kit this year is nice as well.

Favourite football boots?
The Nike Mercurials, in turquoise. They have been my favourite boots for a while, and they’re the only type I’ve worn.

Favourite footballing memory?
Getting minutes with the first team this season against Brentford in pre-season was amazing. It was a great learning experience because you’re playing at a higher level and the intensity is different.

Most talented teammate?
Shaq Forde. I’ve been good friends with him since we were little, and we have been at Watford together since we were nine. I feel like we have the best chemistry, and we understand each other the most on the pitch because we know each other’s playing styles.

Favourite things to do when not playing football?
I like chilling with friends, playing PlayStation and watching Netflix. I’m big into Money Heist at the moment, the new episodes, plus I like Ultimate Team and Call of Duty. I listen to a lot of music especially before games, basically a lot of rap music.

Best footballing advice you’ve received?
Always believe in your ability and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise, or that you can’t do it. Stick to your aim and at some point you will get there if you always believe in yourself.
