By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated midfielder Luigi Gaspar.

The 19-year-old joined the Golden Boys in July 2022, having previously featured for Arsenal. Prior to spending three years with the North London side, Gaspar played for Corinthians in Brazil from Under-7 level.

How would you describe your playing style?
I like to understand the game. In my position, I won’t score loads of goals, but it’s really important to help my teammates. It’s about getting the ball and playing it to my teammates who are in scoring positions. I look at players like Thomas Partey, Casemiro and Sergio Busquets, who are all very similar to my playing style.

Your footballing idol?
I would say my dad, Edu, of course, but then I also look up to Neymar, Ronaldo Nazário and Ronaldinho because I’m Brazilian. They were so quick on the ball and in that Brazilian style it’s amazing to watch. They scored some amazing goals and made me really enjoy the game.

Biggest influence?
My dad was a footballer growing up and so I grew up with the ball at my feet. I grew up watching and enjoying football because my life revolved around the sport through my dad. Everyone was from around the football world.

Most talented teammate?
I would say João Pedro from my time at Watford. I’m very close to him outside of football. When he arrived, we both came to the UK at the same time, so it was just him and me. He was the first guy that I had a friendship with in the UK. In the Academy I would say Jack Grieves, Adrian Blake and Ryan Andrews – these guys have all been involved with the first-team and they always help me.

Favourite football memory?
When I came to the UK, the first game I had was when I went on trial with Arsenal. Nothing was secure and I could’ve got released, but then in my first game I scored my first goal, and they gave me the scholarship. It was a great time to score and everything went in the right direction afterwards.

Your aims for the future?
I just want to achieve as much as possible with Watford.

Best advice you’ve received?
Be yourself on and off the pitch. Being yourself will always help you to improve in everything you do.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
Football was always my Plan A, but if not I might’ve been a model!

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace 78 – I’m not really quick, but I can run.
Shooting 83 – Not a huge part of my game, but I can get involved.
Passing 86 – It’s the most important part as a midfielder.
Dribbling 75 – It’s not my strength.
Defending 80 – It’s good.
Physicality 75 – I’m not that strong.
OVERALL – 83
