Getting To Know: James Collins

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated striker James Collins.

The 18-year-old joined the Young Hornets in January 2023 from Hertford Town. Impressing while on trial, Collins has played for the Hornets’ Under-18 and Under-21 sides, notching goals for both teams.

How would you describe your playing style?
I play as a hold-up striker. I like to keep hold of the ball and bring others into play. Normally most of my goals come from around the penalty spot and the six-yard box. I like converting cutbacks and crosses.

Your footballing idol?
I’d probably say Harry Kane. I try to play like him; he is very good in his hold-up play and he scores plenty of goals. He isn’t the fastest striker so I can take a lot from him. I used to watch the likes of Wayne Rooney a lot when I was younger. His tenacity and his physicality, even when he wasn’t the biggest, was always impressive.

Biggest influence?
I would definitely say my Dad. He has always been there for me, dropping me off and taking me wherever. He has been great.

Most talented teammate?
Michael Adu-Poku. I think he is very good on the ball, and quick and effective at what he does. He is a good all-round player. I played with him up-front recently and it was good. I feel like we work off each other quite well because his pace and my hold-up play blends well together.

Favourite football memory?
I would probably say during my trial period I scored a hat-trick against QPR. That was one of the best moments considering I had never been at an academy before.

Your aims for the future?
I would like to the play in the Premier League, that’s the dream for the long-term.

Best advice you’ve received?
The one I would say – even if you haven’t had a good game, just keep working hard and eventually it will come to you.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
I would like to get into coaching within football if I didn’t play. I would be a more chilled coach and let the players get on with it!

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace 80 – Not the fastest but not the slowest.
Shooting 89 – This is my main attribute.
Passing 80 – It’s a big part of my game but I need to keep working on it.
Dribbling 83 – Important for hold-up play.
Defending 65 – Probably the weakest part of my game.
Physicality 78 – I try and play a physical game.
OVERALL – 83
