Getting To Know: Jack Grieves

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of young Hornets about their journey inside and outside of football.

Jack Grieves, who is next to take on the questions, joined the club for the second time in 2020. The 17-year-old forward has enjoyed a productive campaign this season, featuring for both the Under-18s and Under-23s.

How would you describe your playing style?
I’m a centre forward that likes to hold up the ball and bring others into play, make runs and score goals. Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema are two that I look up to and try to base my game off.

Favourite current Watford footballer?
I would say Ismaïla Sarr. I think he’s played a big part at the club in the last couple of years, scoring goals and getting assists.

Biggest influence?
My whole family, but especially my parents. I started at the club when I was eight. They have taken me all over the country to play different games and even at the low points they have been the most supportive people around me.

Favourite football kit?
As a Watford fan, the 2012/13 shirt was the first shirt I wore as a signed player, so I’d say that one.

Favourite football boots?
The past couple of years I’ve worn the Nike Mercurial Vapors and they are the most comfortable pair of boots I have.

Favourite footballing memory?
I’ve scored two hat-tricks at Vicarage Road, one against Manchester United and the other against Swansea. It was quite surreal. Being a Watford supporter my whole life and scoring at the stadium was quite a moment for me.

Most talented teammate?
I would say Charlie Davis. I think he has played really well this season in all the games I’ve been involved in. He’s been one of the standout players. Charlie and I have always played well together, especially from a young age. I enjoy playing with him because I understand his game and he understands mine.

Favourite things to do when not playing football?
I like to watch other football matches and see how different teams play. I’ve also watched Suits and listened to Drake’s album recently. I like American rap in general. I even play FIFA a bit.

Best footballing advice you’ve received?
My dad has always said to me no matter how many times you get knocked down in football, you always have to find the courage and strength to get back up and keep going. It can be a tough industry and especially in my experience of being released and re-signed, he’s always told me to keep working hard and the good times will come.
