Getting To Know: Ethan Goulding

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next up to take on the questions is Under-18s midfielder Ethan Goulding.

Goulding, a first-year scholar, joined the club back in April 2013.

How would you describe your playing style?

I can play anywhere in midfield. I’m calm on the ball and I like to play forward passes, breaking the lines. I like to break forward and get to the edge of the box. I look up to Kevin De Bruyne because I love his decision-making and how he gets his assists. The amount of goals and assists he gets in a season is fantastic.

Favourite current Watford footballer?

I really like Emmanuel Dennis. He’s really creative and fast, and he gets at people. I also enjoyed watching Juraj Kucka during the 2021/22 season. I like the way he’s really aggressive in the way he attacks the ball, and how he gets tight to players.

Biggest influence?

I’d say my dad. He has always helped me, telling me where I can do better and making sure I’m working hard.

Favourite football kit?

I loved the green Adidas Watford 2018/19 away kit. That one was clean, although the 2021/22 kits were also nice.

Favourite football boots?

I’d say the no-laces version of the Adidas X boots, in red and white. They’re the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn.

Favourite footballing memory?

As a fan, my favourite memory is when Spurs made it to the Champions League final after beating Ajax in 2019. As a player, it has to be when I got my scholarship with Watford - I was over the moon. I had been working towards that for 10, 11 years, and it was a great feeling to know that the hard work had paid off.

Most talented teammate?

George Abbott. He’s really calm on the ball, has good detail in his passing and gets aggressive as a centre-back. I’ve been playing with George for four or five years now, and we have great chemistry on the pitch.

Favourite things to do when not playing football?

I love a bit of FUT Champions on FIFA. I packed Lionel Messi but he’s untradeable so I can’t sell him! In terms of music, I like listening to Drake and Stormzy.

Best footballing advice you’ve received?

Keep working hard, and keep your feet on the ground. Even if you’re playing well at the top of your age group, there is always room for improvement. Those one per cents add up and make the difference - while people are finishing training, you stay out for those extra 10 minutes and it will pay off in the end.
