Getting To Know: Andres Aguilar

By: Watford FC Staff

The academy question-and-answer series shines a light on some of the best upcoming talent at Watford, quizzing a selection of Young Hornets about their journey in and outside of football.

Next to take on the questions is highly-rated midfielder Andres Aguilar.

The 17-year-old joined the Young Hornets in November 2020 and has featured regularly for the Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup this campaign, while occasionally stepping up to Omer Riza’s Under-21 side.

How would you describe your playing style?
I’m a technical player that likes to get on the ball on the half-turn. I’d say I’m a possession-based footballer. As you can see from the FA Youth Cup, I like to get involved in set-pieces and I have a range of passing. That’s a big part of my game, linking up with others.

Your footballing idol?
I grew up in Spain, so I used to watch Barcelona during their tika-taka era. Andrés Iniesta, Xavi - that type of player. They had elegance in how they retained possession. When I used to watch them play, I would always look at their intricate passes and how they would run the midfield. I would also say Lionel Messi, but no one is Messi!

Biggest influence?
My parents have helped me massively, getting me from place to place all the time, especially when I didn’t have a club. As coaches go, Charlie Daniels has probably been the best I have ever had in my life. He has given me so much trust and confidence in myself to play my game. That’s exactly what I needed.

Most talented teammate?
There are so many talented players so this is tough to choose. Charlie Davis is so composed and keeps the ball very well. As midfielders, we understand each other. He plays a slightly deeper role, so he helps to break up the play and most of the time he gives it to me.

Favourite football memory?
I would say playing with freedom as a youngster with no stress or pressure in the sun in Spain. That’s where my love for football grew.

Your aims for the future?
Short-term I want to earn a professional contract of course, and then longer term I want to make it like anyone else in the game.

Best advice you’ve received?
Always train and play like it is your last game. My mum would always mention it, and it’s really good advice.

Your job if you weren’t a footballer?
I’d like to do what David Attenborough does! I think narrating over wildlife documentaries is really cool, and I’d love to do it.

How would you rate yourself on FIFA?
Pace: 72 - I’m not the quickest, but I’m sharp.
Shooting: 82 - Most of my shots go on target, so that has to be a good thing.
Passing: 87 - I’ve had a few assists this season and it’s my main attribute.
Dribbling: 87 - I keep the ball under control.
Defending: 45 - I don’t really get involved in the slide tackles, but I’m always part of the press.
Physicality: 70 - I’m always working on this in the gym.
OVERALL: 85
