Watford FC is pleased to confirm the signing of striker Britt Assombalonga on an initial six-month contract, with the Hornets holding an option to extend for a further year.

Returning to his first club after 10 prolific years in the Sky Bet Championship, League One and Turkish Super League, Assombalonga, 30, has made over 300 appearances in the English game, turning out for Peterborough United, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough since leaving the Golden Boys in 2013.

The DR Congo international ascended the youth ranks at Vicarage Road and signed as a scholar having impressed Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust coaches at Hertswood School, becoming a professional in 2010 after a fruitful spell in the Under-18s and reserves.

Assombalonga thrived on loan at non-league sides Wealdstone and Braintree Town and earned a recall to the first-team, making his debut against Coventry City in March 2012.

A loan to Southend United saw Assombalonga prosper further and move permanently to Peterborough, where he finished as the second-highest goalscorer in League One in 2013/14, with 23 goals.

Enjoying three successful seasons at Championship level with Forest, Assombalonga scored 30 in 69 games and became top goalscorer in his final campaign at the City Ground, helping the Reds to secure survival on the final day of 2016/17.

He joined Middlesbrough in the summer of 2017, spending four years at the Riverside Stadium and netting double figures in three of his four campaigns on Teesside, amassing 47 goals for Boro before leaving for newly-promoted Adana Demirspor in 2021, netting 18 goals in 54 games for the Turkish outfit.

Making nine international appearances for DR Congo since his 2018 debut, Assombalonga joins up with compatriot Edo Kayembe in Hertfordshire, and he will wear the number 34 shirt - the first number he was assigned as a Hornet back at the start of his professional career.

Welcome back, Britt!
