News: Lord’s Taverners Walk Ends At Sensory Room

Nearly 20 supporters of the Lord’s Taverners took to the roads this weekend to take part in a fundraising walk and help raise valuable funds and awareness for disadvantaged and disabled young people in Hertfordshire.

The seven-mile walk started at the Black Boy pub in St Albans and finished at Watford Football Club where those taking part got to witness first-hand, a multi-sensory room that has already been installed at the club that helps young people living on the Autism spectrum.

The sensory room was installed at the end of 2016 as part of the Premier League and BT Disability programme. BT and the Premier League teamed up with The Shippey Campaign and the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity the Lord’s Taverners, to fund sensory rooms across the twenty Premier League clubs, and the one installed at Vicarage Road was one of the first.

These unique spaces allow children with sensory difficulties to watch live football matches from a room with a window onto the pitch, in a calm environment away from the noise and crowds.

Watford FC Supporter Liaison and Disability Access Officer, Dave Messenger, said: “We were delighted to host Lord’s Taverners and the Walk for Wheels team at our award-winning Sensory Room” said Dave Messenger, Watford FC’s Supporter Liaison and Disability Access Officer.

“As part of our Watford Welcomes initiative we are committed to helping disadvantaged and disabled young people. It was a pleasure to support this cause and show the Sensory Room, which the Lord’s Taverners played a key role in developing.”
