Under-23 | Rovers Down Hornets

The Hornets' Under-23s slumped to a disappointing 6-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening in the Premier League Cup.

It was a stark contrast from the last group fixture, in which the young Golden Boys put in a stellar performance to shock Academy giants Southampton under the lights.

Watford were well beaten in Lancashire, their performance epitomising an inconsistent start to their campaign. Their 17/18 record thus far reads played 12, won six, lost six in all competitions.

Callum Wright's double gave Rovers a two-goal advantage at the break, a lead that wouldn't have seemed unassailable when Hayden Mullins gave his half-time team-talk.

But goals from Lewis Mansell, Jack Doyle and Scott Wharton made it 5-0 after 60 minutes to confirm the Hornets' fate.

Substitute Dan Butterworth added a sixth, before Michael Folivi notched a consolation for Watford with ten minutes to play.

The Golden Boys' opportunity to get back on track in the competition comes in a month's time when they host Cardiff (Monday Dec 4, 7pm).

WATFORD: Gartside, Eleftheriou, Mason, Rowan, Stevens, Mukena (Jakubiak 51), Stewart (Sesay 73), Djedje, Folivi, Ryan, Williams (Charles 64).

Subs not used: Huja, Hoskins.

ROVERS: Albinson, Thomson (Buckley 27), Magloire, Platt (Hardcastle 67), Wharton, J. Doyle, C. Doyle, Travis, Wright (Butterworth 61), Rankin-Costello, Mansell.

Subs not used: Dillon, Vale.
