Opposition Profile: Fortuna Düsseldorf

By Danny Varsalona

With Watford set to play their second pre-season friendly tomorrow afternoon against Fortuna Düsseldorf in Austria, watfordfc.com takes a closer look at some unfamiliar opponents for the Golden Boys.

Nickname: Die Flingeraner

Stadium: Esprit Arena

Head Coach: Friedhelm Funkel

Last season position: 1st (Promoted to Bundesliga)

Trivia: They are one of Germany's oldest clubs, having been found in 1895. Only Hertha Berlin and Stuttgart were founded before Fortuna in the top-flight.

German Championship (Now Bundesliga): Winners 1933.

2. Bundesliga Champions: 1989, 2018.

DFB-Pokal (German Cup): Winners 1979, 1980, 5 x runners-up.

European Cup Winners’ Cup: Runners-up 1979.

It was a season to remember for 'Die Flingeraner' as they lifted the 2. Bundesliga title and won promotion to the German top-flight.

A dramatic 2-1 victory over Dynamo Dresden secured their promotion and they will appear in the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2012/13 season.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Friedlhelm Funkel is your go-to-guy to get out of the 2. Bundesliga

Friedhelm Funkel

A promotion specialist. The 64-year-old has a knack of getting teams promoted – he’s recorded six promotions to the top-flight during his time as a manager.

Funkel has been in charge of Fortuna since 2016, helping steady the club and foster a strong team spirit.

Rouwen Hennings spent two years with Burnley

Rouwen Hennings

There were 13 goals in 33 2. Bundesliga appearances last season for the Fortuna front-man.

The tireless forward is a fan favourite after scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against Dresden to secure promotion. A team player, who is just as adept at finding teammates as he is putting the ball in the net.

Niko Gießelmann

Gießelmann possesses all of the attributes to be one of the most dangerous left-backs in the Bundesliga.

The 26-year-old is a rock at the back and a rocket going forward. Three goals and five assists in 31 appearances shows you just how deadly the German can be.

Former Schalke player Marcel Sobottka still has the potential to improve at 24

Marcel Sobottka

Utilised as the base of Die Flingeraner’s midfield, the former Schalke man was top class last campaign.

Breaking up play and moving the ball forward is Sobottka’s bread and butter – but the 24-year-old bagged himself four goals from midfield as well. One to look out for in the Bundesliga next season.

Raphael Wolf

Every team needs someone behind the back-four they can count on – and Raphael Wolf has plenty of experience on his side.

The former Hamburg and Werder Bremen shot-stopper kept seven clean sheets last time out and is an imposing figure in net.
