Defender Craig Cathcart joined the Hornets on a free transfer after leaving Blackpool at the end of the 2013/14 season.

Having come through the age groups at Manchester United, he was loaned successfully to Royal Antwerp in Belgium and Plymouth Argyle, before a temporary stint at Watford. Cathcart made his first debut for the Hornets in 2009 against Leicester City at Vicarage Road.

The Belfast native moved on to Blackpool from the Red Devils and in four seasons with the Seasiders, including a year in the Premier League, he made over 100 appearances.

After returning to Watford on a permanent deal, he made 30 appearances during the 2014/15 season - scoring three goals in the process - as the Hornets gained promotion to the Premier League.

His performances did not go unnoticed, with the defender signing a new and improved four-year deal ahead of the 2015/16 season. Cathcart effortlessly made the return to the top flight of English football, making 40 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Injuries restricted Cathcart to just 16 Watford outings during a frustrating 2016/17 campaign, but his worth to the Golden Boys’ squad was underlined by the award of a new four-year contract in June 2017.

He battled back from a knee injury to play seven times in the Premier League in 2017/18, playing five consecutive full games at the end of the campaign.

The 2018/19 season was a happier one for the centre-half - he made 41 appearances in all competitions as the Golden Boys reached their first FA Cup final in 35 years and recorded their highest-ever points total in the Premier League.

After relegation in 2019/20, Cathcart made 25 Sky Bet Championship appearances the following campaign as Watford bounced straight back to the top-flight, notably scoring the first goal of the season to ensure the Hornets got off to a winning start against Middlesbrough on the opening day.

Cathcart played 31 games in the Premier League in 2021/22, before featuring 28 times back in the Championship during the following campaign, which also saw him reach the 250-match milestone for Watford in December 2022.

Internationally, Cathcart has featured over 70 times for Northern Ireland, perhaps most notably helping his country reach the Round of 16 stage at Euro 2016.
