Christian Kabasele joined Watford from Belgian side Genk in July 2016.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Kabasele started his career as a striker playing for RFC Chaudfontaine before moving to Belgian outfit Eupen, where he was converted into a defender.

Following a loan to Mechelen and then a brief permanent switch to Bulgaria with Ludogorets Razgrad, Kabasele returned to Eupen as a regular in the team, making 57 appearances across two seasons and chipping in with six goals.

Kabasele then agreed a free transfer to fellow Belgian Pro League side Genk in 2014, where he would go on to make 81 appearances, scoring seven times. In the second of his two years at the club, Kabasele was named Player of the Year.

Upon moving to Vicarage Road, the defender continued his reputation as a goalscorer during 2016/17, chipping in with three goals in just 18 appearances in what was an injury-hindered debut campaign.

However, Kabasele did make his senior debut for Belgium in November 2016, having previously been called up to the squad for Euro 2016 without making an appearance during Belgium’s run to the semi-finals. He was also a regular in the nation’s youth set-up and had turned down the chance to represent DR Congo.

In 2017/18 Kabasele built on his debut Hornets season, making 28 appearances in the Premier League and finding the back of the net against Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. He also won the club’s prestigious Community Ambassador award in 2018 for his contributions off the pitch.

The Belgian was in and out of the team in the Premier League during 2018/19 and 2019/20, through a mixture of injuries and stiff competition in defence.

During the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign Kabasele was once again frustrated by injury, but scored his first goal in over three years when he netted against Rotherham United in December and ended the season with 21 appearances.

In May 2021 he was awarded the club’s Community Ambassador prize for the second time in four years, for his efforts with the club’s Hornets At Home scheme during the Covid-19 pandemic, his support of the club’s Community Sports & Education Trust and much more.

Kabasele regularly featured during the second half of the 2021/22 Premier League season, making 16 appearances throughout the campaign. Back in the Championship for 2022/23, he scored one goal - in the penultimate game against Sunderland - in 25 outings.

September 2022 also saw Kabasele presented with the Community Champion award by the Professional Footballers’ Association - further recognising his off-field efforts in and around the local area - while in the same month he played his 150th game for Watford, against Blackburn Rovers.
