THE Hornets completed the deadline day signing of John Eustace in the January 2008 transfer window. Stoke accepted a bid of £250,000 for their captain and the midfielder signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Vicarage Road.

Eustace started his career as a trainee at Coventry City before moving north of the border to represent Dundee United in a brief loan spell, which was also followed by a month at Middlesbrough towards the end of his Sky Blues' career.

The influential midfielder joined Stoke in 2003 and progressed to become captain, before suffering injury which ruled him out of the majority of 2006. After a brief spell of rehabilitation at Hereford United the player returned to the Potteries where he re-established himself as regular pick for Tony Pulis.

His dogged determination and no fear attitude saw him handed the captaincy towards the end of the 2007/08 season.
