THE fact that Stephen McGinn had already made 33 appearances in 2010-11 when he was ruled out with a serious knee ligament and cartilage damage picked up at Doncaster Rovers in February showed just how much he'd progressed in the space of little more than a year at Vicarage Road.

Cutting a slight figure upon his arrival from St. Mirren in January 2010, his debut against then table-toppers Newcastle United did little to suggest that Watford had just acquired a player with a ferocious work ethic and a real eye for a pass.

Hard work in summer 2010 paid off for McGinn, who reported back for pre-season a more imposing figure and went on to feature either centrally behind the striker or on the edge of a midfield diamond under Malky Mackay's stewardship.

Currently working his way back from his February injury, the Glasgow-born Celtic fan is tentatively targeting a Christmas return.
