PREVIOUSLY a captain of Watford's Academy under 18 team defender Adrian Mariappa is a commanding and surprisingly uncompromising stopper for one so young.

The experienced local lad came to prominence when he took his place on the substitutes' bench for the final game of 2004/05 against West Ham United.

As a mark of his composure the Harrow-born centre-back helped his side to a clean sheet on what was his full league debut at Vicarage Road, against Hull City in April 2006.

Employed more recently as a right-back Mariappa was originally a centre-half for the Hornets.

With fellow right-back Lloyd Doyley finding his feet on the left side of the pitch, the two Watford Academy graduates found a successful working partnership in the Hornets defensive during the 2008/09 campaign.

Mariappa signed a new two year deal with Watford after another very successful season with the Golden Boys making 45 appearances in 2008/09 and finding the back of the net for the very first time, scoring against promotion winners Wolverhampton Wanderers.
