SAVE for an unfortunate one-game suspension, home-grown defender Adrian Mariappa would have started every one of Watford's matches for the last two seasons.

The Harrow-born centre-half is now ranked fourth in a list of Hornets' players to have made the most consecutive League starts, with 113 in a row unlikely to be beaten in a hurry thanks to the demands of the modern game.

That impressive total is part of over 200 Watford appearances for the Academy product, some of which coming at his less-favoured right-back position. Regardless of that, however, consistency and reliability are key to Mariappa's continued selection.

Regarded as one of the senior professionals at Vicarage Road these days, indeed named vice-captain last season, he ended 2010-11 still six months shy of his 25th birthday.

He matched central defensive colleague Martin Taylor's exemplary record of 49 starts last term, as the two formed a partnership borne of a combination of height and pace.
