FIRST-choice at the start of the 2004/05 season due to Alec Chamberlain's rib injury sustained in the final pre-season game, former Academy goalkeeper Richard Lee went on to establish himself as one of the leading performers in the division with some memorable performances in both League action and during the Hornets' run to the Carling Cup semi-final.

However, a cheekbone fractured in five places at Coventry City just before Christmas of 2004 prevented the shot-stopper from enjoying the Liverpool experience, then a further injury meant mentor, coach and friend Alec Chamberlain finished that campaign between the sticks for Watford. Since then

Lee spent the 2005/06 season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Upon returning to Watford Lee proved a more than able understudy to England 'keeper Ben Foster, performing admirably in Foster's absence through injury.

Lee started the 2007/08 season as number two to Estonian stopper Mart Poom, but was soon back in the action and putting in some fantastic performances right the way through until the end of the season.

During the 2008/2009 campaign, Lee started 11 matches under the direction of Aidy Boothroyd and his last appearance for the Hornets was against Barnsley in November 2008.

Following the arrival of Brendan Rodgers a few weeks later, Watford and England International stopper Scott Loach caught the eye of the new manager and since then Lee has been a valuable role model and aide for the Rookie 'keeper.

The Watford Academy graduate signed a new contract under Rodgers that keeps him at Vicarage Road for another year.
