MALKY READY FOR HULL

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

WATFORD boss Malky Mackay is expecting a tough game tomorrow (Saturday) when his team travel to the KC Stadium, but he is confident the Hornets' current good form can continue.

Last Saturday Malky's men were two minutes away from maintaining a 100% start to the season. Two late Coventry goals might have felt like a defeat, but the boss wants to move on quickly and concentrate on Hull City.

He said: "We've got to move on now, we are on to Hull now" said the Scotsman. "Hull have just come down from the Premiership, they've got a big squad of players and they've got players who have been involved in the Premiership in the last couple of years.

"On Saturday we go to Hull knowing it's going to be a tough encounter."

The Tigers will be looking to kick-start their season after a disappointing trip to Millwall last weekend. The Hornets boss is taking nothing for granted.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand people live in the catchment of Hull, they get good gates and they've got a good stadium, and they've just come down from the Premiership.

"As far as they are concerned there is a real strong make-up there. As I say, on Saturday we've got to go up there and we know the task ahead of us.

"I'm expecting a tough game. What actually transpires, we'll see. But I'm expecting it to be a tough encounter."

Watford's start to the season has been a surprise to many critics. Danny Graham has started the season on fire, he leads the scoring charts with four goals and John Eustace is only two behind.

The Hornets seem to be playing with no fear and the gaffer puts their positive early start down to belief.

"A lot of people in the media wrote them off before the season started. I think that brings them even closer together. The fact that they've showed belief in their own ability, there's a togetherness there, that's the biggest benefit for me."

New face Jordon Mutch will be in the squad on Saturday after making his debut as a substitute last weekend.

The manager added: "Jordon is going to be, I think, a real good player for Birmingham eventually. We've had a look at him and brought him in.

"He's played in the league below and in this league for Doncaster as well. He's a young, gifted midfielder who is very comfortable on the ball and desperate to learn, and desperate to get game time.

"We think we've brought in a real good footballer with a good attitude. We think we can bring him on as a player and he brings his qualities to us."

Mutch might not be the last player to be brought into Vicarage Road this season. Malky admits the Club are still looking to strengthen before the transfer window closes.

He commented: "We are still looking because we have a very young squad. We still need a few more people for strength and depth in case of injuries.

"Then we are straight into playing youngsters in the first team. In the short term that's great, but in the longer-term it can impair their development when you've got to throw them straight in and let them play constantly.

"So we've got to make sure that we try to bring another couple of people in through the door."

The Hornets are in good shape on the injury front with the only doubt being goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin after he missed the first home clash of the season last Saturday.

If he is unavailable then Academy 'keeper Jonathan Bond will once again step in on the bench.

If you're travelling to Hull on Saturday then why not try The New Malton Club in Kingston upon Hull? If you're travelling by car, they offer a free car park. And it's only a 1 minute walk away from the ground.
