BOSS CALLS FOR CUP ATTENTION FROM 'ORNS

Posted on: Wed 11 Aug 2010

MALKY Mackay urged his team to move on from Friday's impressive start to the league season and turn their full attentions to the Carling Cup tie with Aldershot tonight (Tuesday) to avoid any potential cup upset in Hampshire this evening.

"We will be going to Aldershot with the same mentality as we had going to Norwich on Friday" said the Watford manager.

"We need to make sure we go down there and turn all our attentions to Cup football rather than league football for tonight.

"If we do that, that will certainly stand us in good stead because if you don't do that, these things can certainly come back to bite you."

Last year's the 'Orns faced a battling Barnet side who proved a tough team to beat. The Hornets had to take the determined League Two side to extra time to get the 2-0 victory.

He added: "I think you will see some strange results over the next few days, I think it's tough everywhere you go for this type of tie.

"Sometimes you see Cup upsets early on because the team might not have been together for long with new signings but also because they aren't in the right frame of mind about the game.

"They think that going to a team in a lesser league means it will be easy. It's absolutely not.

"I've been at enough of these games to see upsets over the years and it's all about mentality for things like that.

"It's something you like to drip feed and remind them of - remind them of the fact that it's just as tough an environment as any league game and that's something they know here.

"You take your win over the following days you debrief that win and you enjoy the moment but games come think and fast in this league and the next game is always the most important and the one you must look towards.

"The other game is finished; get on with the next one."

Most other teams in the three tiers of the Football League played on the Saturday but the Hornets had the advantage of playing on Friday night, officially kicking off the Football League season with their win at Carrow Road. Malky went on to comment that this will be an advantage to his team tonight.

"That extra day is very beneficial" he said.

"It also helps that we are playing on a Tuesday instead of a Wednesday ahead of our first home game of the season on Saturday.

"Everyone has come through Friday's game fine and we also have the added bonus of Dale Bennett in the squad again."
