"WE'RE UP FOR IT AND READY TO GO"

Posted on: Thu 28 Jan 2010

WATFORD boss Malky Mackay is in good spirits ahead of his teams' match with Swansea City at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Having been successful in securing the services of young Rochdale talent, Will Buckley, who was Malky's second signing of the January transfer window, the Hornets manager says he is planning for the future.

"Will is an exciting new prospect and he's a player that will be good going forwards in the longer term" explained Malky.

"We need to build for the future and we need youngsters who are going to take us forward because there's always changeovers as time goes on and they will be ready to kick on then.

"At the moment we have to cut our cloth to find loans that suit us and if they are experienced players then great.

"You can then sell the club and our vision to them and that's certainly something we are trying to do.

"You look at the turnover for players in the last year, and it's incredible the amount of business that's been done at the club in trying to balance where we are now with the players who are under contract.

"We'll have a small redress of the balance in the summer but we're getting there as far as becoming a club that can live within it's means.

"Credit to the people here like Julian Winter, John Stephenson, Graham Taylor and everyone's who's been involved to get the club to that point and rebuild the squad into what's sustainable for the club."

The Golden boys haven't had a game on home soil since Boxing Day and the boss is chomping at the bit to get back on the Vicarage Road turf again.

"It's been a difficult run recently being away from home so much and so it will be good to get back in front of the home fans.

"We've got to make sure we pick up points in this division and we haven't been doing that away from home.

Malky is looking for his team to get back on the winning track again at home this weekend

"I thought we did well at Bristol City (28 January) but the last two games against Doncaster and Blackpool have been disappointing.

"We've got to make sure we come back from that at home on Saturday against Swansea.

"We want to make sure that we are hard to beat away from home and that will come, but right now, it's good to get back to Vicarage Road and put pressure on our opposition."

With the Welsh side currently sitting in fifth place in the Championship, Malky isn't complacent about his visitors this weekend.

"It's going to be difficult, you have to play against good teams who are on good runs but to be fair, last time we were here, we played against a team who are now at the top of the league in Nottingham Forest and in my view, we should have won that game.

"So we know that we're up against a good team with a good manager and we've got to make sure we're up for it and ready to go out there and give our best."

 Mackay
Malky:"Any team who puts a consistent run together can jump right up the division"

This week has thrown up several shock results in the league, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the Championship, something that the Scotsman is none too aware of.

He said: "Every week, the Championship springs a surprise, whether it's on the pitch or off the pitch; a transfer of a player or a result.

"There is a result each week which you couldn't have predicted and the consistency in the league comes from the teams who are financially stable and stronger with big squads.

"There's always going to be one or two teams who surprise you and go against that statistic, but teams can put runs together, and any team who puts a consistent run together can jump right up the division in the space of a month.

"It's a great division to be involved in and a great division to watch."
