ASHLEY Young has called for Watford to show real character in the wake of the biggest defeat of their Premier League season at Stamford Bridge yesterday afternoon (Saturday).

The winger, who will now join up with the England Under 21 squad for their midweek fixture with Holland, made the call after the Hornets were beaten by four at the home of Championship contenders Chelsea.

"We wanted to start brightly and we should've done better than we have," said Young.

"We've lost four-nil and we have got to make sure we bounce back with some character at Portsmouth next week.

"We created a few chances but we know we've got to take them against teams like this, because once they get the first goal they can dictate the game.

"Being two-nil down at half time we knew we had to pick ourselves back up, and again we started brightly in the second half, but it just didn't work for us.

"It's difficult to chase a game against a team of this quality as we found out at the Emirates and they've undoubtedly got quality throughout the team.

"For us it's about the reaction now and we have to show we have character in this team.

"We know we can go anywhere and get three points and there was no sense going to Chelsea that we were just going to write the game off. Anything can happen.

"If we go to Portsmouth and start brightly like we did at Stamford Bridge and in the previous games then there's every chance of getting the three points. The difference is we have got to carry on for the whole 90 minutes and more."
