Not one to normally give too much away with his post-match thoughts, Nigel Gibbs was unreservedly delighted with the performance of his Reserves as they opened up their pre-season preparations by cruising to a 5-0 win over non-League neighbours St. Albans City at Clarence Park last night.

"We played some excellent football, particularly in the first half," said Nigel. "The movement was good, we were bright and on our game which really pleased me as it was our first pre-season match."

Hameur Bouazza scored twice while there were also goals for Ashley Young, Andy Ferrell and Jason Norville on a warm July evening in front of several hundred spectators.

Added Nigel: "With the reduction in numbers of the professional squad this season, these lads can realistically aim for the first-team by playing well in the Reserves. Six of the starting line-up have played in the first-team already so they know what it's like and want more of it.

"Their approach was excellent. It's a young group but a capable group from which I feel we can really push some individuals through again this season."
