WATFORD'S development squad hosted Southampton this afternoon (Wednesday) at their London Colney training ground.
The Hornets were on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line but the fixture provided a match for the development squads from both clubs.
The squads comprised of young professionals and scholars, with the Golden Boys giving some much-needed game time to their younger players who have been without a reserve match since they played Colchester United on Tuesday 18th August.
Irishman Rene Gilmartin was given a run-out in goal while Academy first-year scholar Aaron Tumwa enjoyed a taste of things at left back.
Summer signing Tom Aldred started at right back with Dale Bennett and Eddie Oshodi occupying the centre half spots. New arrival Josh Walker started in central midfield alongside Ross Jenkins.
The Saints contained a similarly youthful side with a handful of players with significant first-team experience.

The visitors took the lead five minutes before half time following a neat move and tricky run, this finished with a low drilled effort firing in past the figure of Gilmartin.
At half time the score was 1-0, but the Saints added two further goals to make the final score 3-0.
Speaking this afternoon to watfordfc.com, First Team Coach David Kerslake said: "We were okay with the ball but we never threatened Southampton to get in behind them.
"At half time we asked the lads to try and squeeze play and get the ball forward quickly.
"There's lots of good quality opposition around so if we can arrange these matches when there is a break in the reserve league then we will do."
WATFORD STARTING XI: Gilmartin; Aldred, Oshodi, Bennett, Tumwa; Bryan, Jenkins, Walker, Mingoia; Henderson, Whichelow.
