MOONEY’S MONDAY REACTION

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

TOMMY MOONEY was at The KC Stadium on Saturday fulfilling his role as summariser for BBC Three Counties and Hornets Player via www.watfordfc.com.

We spoke to the former Hornet to get his views on the clash between the 'Orns and Nigel Pearson's Hull City.

It was Mooney's first live game of the campaign after catching the Hornets on television for the curtain-raiser against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Before commenting on the game itself, did he notice any big differences between the Hornets of today and those he saw last season?

He said: "Compared to the end of last season the players are certainly more relaxed. At the end of last season there was the tension and the worry of relegation hanging over young players' heads and you could see they were very nervous.

"On Saturday, at the beginning of the game they did show some nerves because there was an awful lot of space in the middle of the field and they didn't keep possession very well.

"There wasn't too many occasions where you saw them keep half a dozen passes, but that developed as the game went on and Watford got better."

The weekend saw the debut of Josh Walker as well another chance for Jordon Mutch and Troy Deeney - who both stepped up off the bench. On first impressions, Mooney was encouraged by their impacts.

"I liked the way the new guys in Deeney, Mutch and Walker came on and did very well" he added.

"They adapted well to the formation and certainly made an impression."

Despite the age of the Watford side, the Middlesbrough born former Villa trainee added that he could see some development in the team since the end of last season.

He commented: "Hull lost 4-0 to Millwall last week and they certainly weren't anywhere near their best on Saturday. It's a very good point for Watford but they are right to be slightly disappointed.

"They were very professional but they did get a little bit lucky at the end of the game. Barmby got about them but then there isn't a defence in this league that he wouldn't worry because he's so intelligent.

"Watford did well - they didn't play as well as they can but they have got a point and they're still unbeaten.

"Considering the position the club finished last season, I think you would take this after four games.

"Watford have played well and scored some goals, they've got Graham off the mark early and some young players have been brought into the first-team.

"Sometimes when you bring in four, five or six young players they can crumble. At this stage they're a million miles from that, the youngsters have come in and done well."

Mooney will be a regular match summariser on BBC Three Counties and Hornets Player this season alongside matchday commentator Jon Marks.
