EYE ON THE TIGERS

Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010

HULL City's pre-season form was impressive to say the least. They won six out of their seven fixtures and scored 17 goals in the process.

Despite the optimism gained from a promising summer, The Tigers have had two mixed results so far. Their eagerly anticipated opener with Swansea couldn't have gone better.

New manager Nigel Pearson achieved his first win of the season, captain Ian Ashbee scored on his first game back in 15 months, on loan Spurs ace John Bostock scored on his debut and the cherry on the cake was their clean sheet.

However their next match, against newly promoted Millwall at The New Den, had the City players crashing back down to earth. A heavy 4-0 defeat just showed how unpredictable and tough The Championship can be.

They have kept some players from last season that have played at the top level and brought in some exciting talent as well.

Bostock is a talented youngster currently on a season long loan from Tottenham. He has a sweet left foot and loves to attack. He looks like he will be a very promising signing for the Yorkshire club.

Hull also secured the signatures of two ex-Baggies over the last few weeks. The first of the two was midfield playmaker Robert Koren.

Pearson believes he can be an "influential player" at the KC this season. His vision and experience in general could prove to be valuable for City this season.

The second signing was Jay Simpson from Arsenal. The 21-year-old striker is a very exciting signing for The Tigers and adds some youth to their strike force.

Simpson signed a three-year contract this week and will be looking to add to the 13 goals he scored on loan at QPR last season.

Pearson is two games into his new role as manager and is having to re-build a team who has lost the likes of Boaz Myhill, Stephen Hunt and Dean Marney.

Yet with experienced players still at the Club like Ashbee, Nicky Barmby and Anthony Gardner they will feel that they have a very good chance of bouncing straight back into the Premiership.

Pearson is still a relatively young manager but he has managed six teams, including Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Carlisle, but his last job was his most impressive.

Over the last two seasons he guided Leicester City into The Championship and nearly gained back-to-back promotions. They ended the season falling just short of The Championship play-off final, eventually losing to Cardiff in last year's thrilling semi-final shoot-out.

The last time The Hornets beat City on their own patch was five years ago. That day Watford came back from an early Nicky Barmy strike to win 2-1, thanks to goals from Gavin Mahon and Mathew Spring.

Their most recent meetings between the sides came in the 2008 play-off semi-final. It didn't go Watford's way as Hull secured their place in the final and eventually the top flight.
