TAKING THE POSITIVES

Posted on: Sun 11 Apr 2010

AFTER putting a dent in West Brom's immediate promotion plans last Monday, Watford midfielder Don Cowie is hoping the boost from the nature of the Hornets' performance can be put into action tomorrow (Saturday).

The Golden Boys put in a battling, spirited display against The Baggies at Vicarage Road and despite some injuries being picked up, the unity within the Watford camp appears unfazed.

Reflecting on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, Cowie said: "Playing Saturday and Monday is physically very hard on the body.

"We've got a small squad and we've picked up a few injuries, so it isn't easy.

"Considering our away form, to go to Preston and come away with a point was a positive result."

Cowie picked up an injury at Deepdale after coming on as a substitute, but was declared fit enough to start against The Baggies.

"Again, against West Brom we played really well" said the 27-year-old.

"The conditions weren't easy and going down to 10 men wasn't ideal, but we stuck at it as a group and got ourselves another valuable point.

"I know we were a bit disappointed losing the goal so late in the game, but I think if you weigh it up, it is a good point.

"We knew they were going to come at us, when we were down to 10 men we would have taken a point.

"Danny produced an unbelievable strike to put us 1-0 up, we would like to have hung on as it would have been massive result for us.

He said: "But, getting a point against West Brom, who are on the verge of promotion, wasn't a bad result and we can take a lot of positives from it.

"The crowd got behind us and it can give us that extra wee percent to spur us on. The noise when we scored and for the 10 minutes afterwards was massive and it got us through the game."

Looking ahead to tomorrow's game with Argyle, it is likely to be a different test with both teams fighting for survival in the Championship - however the need to win will be just as essential.

Cowie added: "Plymouth have picked up recently and I'm sure their confidence is pretty high as well.

"Hopefully the fans will do what they did on Monday and get right behind us."

The Golden Boys will be without some injured and suspended players for the fixture tomorrow, but the Scottish international feels those who will step in have what it takes.

He commented: "I think over the course of the season we've been very fortunate with injuries, it just seems to happen all at the same time.

"I don't know if the amount of games in a short space of time has caught up with us, but we've got a good, young squad, you only need to look at Dale [Bennett] as he has been outstanding the last two games.

"He's slotted in, but we knew he could do that because he did it at the start of the season."

Cowie

This season has been Cowie's first full campaign in English football and he can feel the difference between a season south of the border, compared to football in his native country.

"It is totally different from what I was used to in Scotland" he remarked.

"Playing every Saturday with the odd midweek game was the norm for me.

"You can prepare on a week-to-week basis, but it is totally different here.

"You may only play an extra eight league games, but that's an extra eight midweek games and you can certainly feel the difference.

"It's tough and it is demanding" he noted, "but it is something I'll learn from for next season as it gets demanding at this time of year."
