WATFORD CHANT REACHES FINAL OF NATIONAL COMPETITION
THE Get On campaign recently announced that Watford fan Aiden Carroll made it to the final of this season's search for the nation's best new football chant.
Aiden's chant, to the tune of "Gold" by Spandau Ballet, caught the judges' eye for its simple and catchy lyrics, winning Aiden a pair of football tickets.
In addition, Andy Smith, also a Watford fan, has won the World Cup category for England chants, showing that the creativity of Watford's fans knows no bounds!
Aiden's chant beat entries from across the country to make it into the final, but in the end the judges - Barnsley FC's poet in residence Ian McMillan and last year's competition winner Terry Cockell - chose Rob Loader's chant for Liverpool FC as the overall winner.
The competition was launched last August to tap into the writing talents of the nation's football fans, and shows how creative with language supporters can be. It is part of the government's Get On campaign to encourage adults to recognise the ability that they have with words in their daily life and inspire those who need to brush up on their English skills to enrol on a local, free course and gain a qualification.
On making it into the final, Aiden said, "I'm really glad to have been announced as a runner-up as a long-term supporter of Watford FC. I love it when a chant starts up in the crowd and everyone ends up singing along, it's great fun and really helps the good mood along. I hope that my chant might inspire the boys to victory if ever it ends up on the terraces some day."
Ian McMillan added "A clever or funny chant is a great way of getting behind your players and makes a difference to what is happening on the pitch, and having good language skills is important in all walks of life.
"Away from the football stadium, it can help you get on in work, earn more money and help your kids with their homework. Anyone who wants to boost their way with words on the terrace or anywhere else can take advantage of the free courses available at their local college. Go to www.direct.gov.uk/geton or call 0800 66 0800 to find out more."
As a prize for winning the competition, Aiden has won a pair of tickets to a Championship, League One or League Two match of his choice, courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Aiden's chant, to the tune of "Gold" by Spandau Ballet:
"Goal!
Always believe in the 'Oooorns
Malky's got the power to know
we're indestructible
always believe in, because you are
Goal!"
Andy Smith's chant to the tune of 'Hakuna Matata':
"Capello's new England! What a wonderful team.
Capello's new England! World Cup winning dream.
They'll be our heroes, if they can reign supreme.
It's our victory philosophy
Capello's new England!"
Rob Loader won the competition with this chant for Liverpool FC, sung to the tune of 'My ol' man's a dustman':
"Glen Johnson is our Right Back,
He runs on down the wing,
He whips in loads of crosses
and he puts hard tackles in
He can cut inside defenders
He can take it to the line
and on his Anfield Debut
His volley was sublime
You've seen him here for Chelsea,
He's been with Pompey too,
But now he's with the Redmen,
He's coming after you! OH....."
