EXPERIENCED defender Martin Taylor may have only been at Vicarage Road for a couple of weeks, but he has wasted no time in finding his feet.

The former-Birmingham man has already formed a reliable partnership at the back with captain Jay DeMerit, and he opened his account for the 'Orns in the 2-0 win over Bristol City on Tuesday night.

"It was great to get on the score-sheet," admitted Taylor.

"It's been a great start for me here, playing three games, only conceding once, and picking up a couple of wins on the way.

"Everyone's been really supportive, we've got some quality players in the squad and they've helped me settle in well."

Taylor was equally as enthusiastic about his centre-half partnership with DeMerit - "Jay's a good talker," he said, "he knows his job and he's nice and loud on the pitch, which helps everyone a great deal.

"He's obviously got a lot of experience in the Championship, as well as Aidy (Mariappa) and Lloyd (Doyley), so playing along side them has made it a lot easier for me."

Since arriving in WD18 at the end of January, Taylor has made a big impression, and believes his debut against Sheffield United was just what the doctor ordered.

"Having just come in to the team it was vital to keep it tight and not concede any goals," he recalled.

"A clean-sheet and three points on my debut was really important, but we now need to push on, keep the goals against tally down, and keep the run going."

Having already shown the Vicarage Road faithful what he has to offer, the 30-year-old believes he can put his experience to good use in Malky Mackay's relatively young squad.

"I've got experience that some of the younger players don't have, so if I feel there's something that needs to be said on the pitch then I'll say it.

"From what I've seen so far they're a great group of lads, everybody knows their job, and they all work very hard in training."

Having fitted in to Malky Mackay's side impressively, the 6'4" defender believes that with some important games coming up, the Hornets can be involved in the race to make the play-offs.

"Everyone here wants the club in the Premier League, and it's definitely obtainable," he said.

"I know we've got to take each game as it comes, but if we can get in and around the play-offs this season that would be brilliant."

The ambitious centre-half has certainly made himself at home since joining up with his new team-mates, and after a dominant display at both ends of the pitch on Tuesday night, he'll be looking for a strong finish to the season.
