ON a cool autumn evening whilst some of the fans were still finding their seats, Watford struck the goal in the first minute of the match last Thursday (12 October).
Sally Wade played a great ball through to Kate Longhurst in space outside the Millwall penalty area who had a fantastic touch to set herself up for a shot.
Spotting Millwall's keeper and Captain Claire Lacey a few yards off her line and with clinical accuracy she floated the ball over Lacey's head giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half settled into a steady pace, with both teams creating equal chances, but neither able to capitalise on them.
The half time score at Northwood was 1-0 to Watford as the players returned to their dressing rooms.
After a half time pep talk, Watford continued their high work rate but employed more thought to their game and managed to steal the ball in the Millwall half on a few occasions in the early exchanges, but were unable get the ball into the net.
Millwall worked to pull a goal back but couldn't put anything substantial together as they resorted to longer ball tactics.
Just after the hour, Watford again delivered into the Millwall net. Kate Longhurst lofted the ball from deep on the left side into the Millwall six yard box.
Holly Miles had great control and headed the ball down for Katie Owen who glanced it over the line with her knee, as the referee's assistant raised his flag for offside.
It took until the 76th minute for Watford to double their lead as Bonnie Horwood drove home a corner from the left.
Millwall's keeper Lacey met the ball at her near post, but having been struck with such ferocity by Horwood, the ball hit Lacey's hands at head height and diverted up over the line near the cross bar.
Soon after, centre-back Cori Daniels had to be replaced due to taking a knock, but the Watford defence continued to their defiant mood and corners were the best Millwall could produce on the day.
Kimmy Dixson nearly added a third with 10 minutes to go but saw her 25 yard drive deflected agonisingly over the bar.
