JAY DeMerit's Confederations Cup success came to an end last night as his USA team lost 2-3 to Brazil in the Final of the tournament.

Despite the loss, the game marked a historical achievement for the defenders' nation with the second-place finish standing as the best-ever performance for the USA in a FIFA competition.

With the game being the USA's first ever final in a major FIFA tournament, DeMerit's home nation started the match as underdogs.

However, they led the five-time world champions for an impressive 64 minutes before Brazil replied with three unanswered goals.

The Hornets captain has had a very successful competition with his country, earning much praise for his defensive play after America's impressive 2-0 win over Spain.

The defender will return to training with Watford in the next few weeks after a well earned break.

Manager Malky Mackay praised his skipper saying "I'm delighted for Jay; he called me from South Africa last week to let me know he was going to be playing in the Spain game.

"Then to go on and play a Man of the Match style game, keeping Torres and Villa quiet was great."

The Watford gaffer congratulated his former teammate for his performances this summer.

"Achievements such as this shows a great reward for someone who had a rather unorthodox start to his career and who has developed into a formidable defender.

"And now Jay comes back to Watford with vast experience at International level, which is something you cannot buy. It's all well for him, and us!"

The rest of the USA team who do not play in the English leagues will go on to defend the CONCACAF Gold Cup title from July 3rd-26th in venues across America.

Jay's next call up will hopefully be to play a part in the USA's World Cup 2012 qualifying campaign, as they meet Mexico on 12th August.
