JAY DeMerit succeeded in getting his home nation to the final of the Confederations Cup in South Africa last night after an epic performance against some of the world's best footballers.

The win puts the Americans into the finals for the first time in their history.

Spain, the current European Champions, who hadn't lost in 36 games put out their strongest side on the night.

But this did not deter the Watford captain as he helped the USA to a 2-0 victory and produce one of the biggest surprise results in the cups' history.

The Spaniards went into the clash as firm favourites, ranked number one in the world.

However, the 'Orns defender seemed un-phased and DeMerit went on to play a key role in the defensive setup for the USA, successfully keeping the ball away from the feet of David Villa, Fernando Torres, Sergio Ramos and Albert Riera.

"We did a very good job of sealing down the middle of the field" commented manager Bob Bradley, speaking to the official national US Soccer website.

"I thought our backline did very well. In the centre, both Jay DeMerit and Oguchi Onyewu had very strong efforts. Overall, it's a team effort to make sure the defending is good and to look for moments to get a goal."

DeMerit has so far played four consecutive matches for his country in the competition and will be hoping that his solid performance last night will ensure he keeps his place for the final.  Bob Bradley's squad will be facing either Brazil or host nation South Africa on Sunday in Johannesburg.

Don't forget that Watford and England U21 goalkeeper Scott Loach will also be hoping for selection ahead of the Young Lion's European semi-final clash with competition hosts Sweden tomorrow (Friday) after earning his fourth cap with a start against Germany on Monday.
