CATCH WATFORD-BASED COMEDY

Posted on: Mon 29 Jun 2009

A play that heavily features Watford and the Golden Boys is due to start next month in London.

Elton John's Glasses by David Farr is running from Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 July 2009, at St Anne's Hall, Wandsworth, SW18 2LR.

The New Stagers Theatre Club is proud to present Elton John's Glasses, a comedy which promises to send you on a roller coaster ride of emotions!

The plot includes...

The 1984 FA Cup final reaches an exciting climax. Watford are 1-0 down to Everton and are fighting back.

The tension is unbearable. In just six years, manager Graham Taylor and Chairman Elton John have taken Watford from the bottom of the League to a Wembley final and the edge of glory.

And then...Everton's Andy Gray scores the decisive goal. Legend has it that the goalkeeper was unsighted by a sudden glare of reflected sunlight from Elton John's glasses. The dream died that day.

Some years later, agoraphobic ex-fan Bill spends his days living in a hovel close to Watford's ground, replaying that fateful moment on a videotape that's almost worn out.

Traumatised by the defeat and his own failure in life, he's retreated from the world, visited only on matchdays by Julie, with whom he is having a secret affair.

Today is the last match of the season - if Watford lose, they are relegated.

Bill is visited for the first time in many years by his younger brother Dan, manager of the pop group Goldilox, and fellow band members Shaun and Tim.

They're on their way to play a gig, but without their instruments they have a bit of a problem. Then there's the fact that Tim's glasses make him look the spitting image of Elton John, much to Bill's rage - but he can't see a thing without them.

Into this scene bounces Amy, a young Watford fan, looking for some blokes to join her in a kickabout. And then Julie turns up for her assignation with Bill, and things get really complicated…

'A comedy about ageing, failure and football', this play is funny and sad in equal measure. The author, David Farr, is a highly successful playwright and much sought-after director, currently directing Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
