DEMERIT'S DOUBLE CELEBRATION
LAST weekend was a good one for Watford skipper Jay DeMerit as he celebrated a 2-1 win at home in Chicago with his team mates and a call up for the Federations Cup competition.
DeMerit's countrymen achieved a 2-1 victory over Honduras in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago after coming from behind to clinch the win.
A spot kick from Landon Donovan (43) and a header on target from Carlos Bocanegera (68) ensured the USA are still in the running for the 2012 World Cup Finals as they occupy second place in the table.
The Watford captain gained his 10th cap and second appearance in the World Cup qualifiers as he replaced USA skipper Carlos Bocanegera in the 71 minute and helped his team to fend off attacking advances from the visitors as they tried to get an equaliser.
Yesterday (Sunday), USA Head Coach Bob Bradley named DeMerit in his final 23 man squad who will be travelling to South Africa for the UEFA Confederations Cup competition which starts on June 15.

DeMerit: Continues his international duty in the Federations Cup next week |
The FIFA Confederations Cup is made up of the six champions of each regional confederation, the defending World Cup champions, and the host nation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The USA's first opponents will be defending World Cup champions Italy and DeMerit and his team mates will be facing further tough competition from the likes of Brazil (June 18) and Egypt (June 21) in the tournament.
"The FIFA Confederations Cup is a great opportunity to play against top level competition and gain further experience competing in tough games" said Bradley, speaking to ussoccer.com, the official US Soccer website.
"Equally important is the chance for our team to experience the environment in South Africa, everything from travel to food to weather. We believe the experience will be invaluable if we qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup."
