HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR WILL

Posted on: Wed 28 Jan 2009

WILL Hoskins has more than played his part in Watford's back-to-back wins since he returned to the starting XI at the weekend.

The former Rotherham striker hasn't been a regular starter since Brendan Rodgers took over in November but has come back in determined fashion.

After finding the net against Crystal Palace on Saturday with his sixth of the season, Hoskins worked tirelessly for the cause last night (Tuesday) as the Hornets did the business in front of goal with three strikes against Burnley under the lights at Vicarage Road.

He said: "The team worked hard, they [Burnley] kept the ball well but our resilience paid off, our attacking play got us the win in the end.

"Now we've got three strikers scoring - and Tamas has come on and banged in two! Teams are going to be afraid that we can get the goals, also there's Tommy Smith and Jobi who scored as well."

Hoskins has now been in Hertfordshire for two years since he and Lee Williamson were brought in from Rotherham and after both settling in at different speeds, the ever-maturing Hoskins reflects on his time at The Vic so far.

Asked whether his team play has improved since he joined the Golden Boys, he said: "It's different when you're younger.

"You try to play your game rather than the game for the team and I think that's what developed me as a player over the two years that I've been here.

"That little bit extra hard work has paid off - you may not get the ball but because of your hard work it may make their play break down, that's what I think you've got to do for the team and that's why we got the win against Burnley."

Some fantastic goals have been scored in WD18 over the course of the last two home games and supporters have seen some great end-to-end moves, but has the return to a 4-4-2 style has that big an effect on the players?

"There's a lot of players who have played 4-4-2 all of their careers" commented Hoskins, however he is hesitant to attribute everything to the move towards that formation.

He added: "But it's not much different from 4-3-3 because we're keeping the ball the same and keeping possession.

"I just feel that after this win we can go into the Wolves game full confidence, but it will be very difficult as they're pushing for promotion."

Finally, the 22-year-old was grateful to the home crowd for their support against the Clarets.

Night games always create a good atmosphere and the striker enjoyed the backing that he and the team received and the praise he received when he left the field.

"It was a lot better atmosphere; the players know when the fans get behind us that we put on a better show."
